What was Jim Jordan’s Role on January 6?

Jim Jordan, a maga republican congressman from Ohio, has been a close ally of former president Donald Trump since Trump’s time in office. Jordan was one of the most vocal supporters of Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and he has been repeatedly questioned about his role in the events leading up to the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Jordan has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, but he has also refused to cooperate with the House select committee investigating the January 6 attack. The committee has subpoenaed Jordan, but he refused to appear for an interview or provide documents.

The committee has said that it has evidence that Jordan had multiple conversations with Trump on January 6, including a phone call on the morning of the attack. The committee also has evidence that Jordan spoke with other members of Congress and Trump allies about plans to challenge the election results. Jordan has denied that he had any conversations with Trump or other members of Congress about the January 6 attack. He has also said that he did not speak to anyone about challenging the election results. It hard not to think of the word “collaborator” the way Jordan has left the optics play out.

The committee has not released any of the evidence it has against Jordan, so it is not clear what he is alleged to have done. However, the committee released a report in December 2022 that concluded Jordan was “a significant player in President Trump’s efforts” to overturn the election. The report also found that Jordan “may have been involved in” the planning of the January 6 attack, but did not definitively conclude whether he was directly involved.

Jordan has denied any wrongdoing and has refused to cooperate with the committee’s investigation. He has also repeatedly promoted the false claim that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump.

In addition to his involvement in Trump’s efforts to overturn the election, Jordan has also been criticized for his role in the January 6 attack itself. On the day of the attack, Jordan spoke at a rally where Trump urged his supporters to march on the Capitol and “fight like hell.” Jordan also voted against impeaching Trump for inciting the insurrection.

Jordan’s involvement in the January 6 attack has made him a controversial figure within the Republican Party. Some Republicans have defended Jordan, while others have criticized him for his role in the events of that day.

The Questions That Remain

There are a number of unanswered questions about Jim Jordan and January 6. These include:
What did Jordan know about Trump’s plans for January 6? Did Jordan participate in any of Trump’s efforts to overturn the election results? Did Jordan have any contact with the people who attacked the Capitol on January 6? The committee has not yet answered these questions, but it is likely that they will be a focus of the committee’s investigation in the future.

If Jordan is found to have been involved in the January 6 attack, it could have serious implications for him. He could be charged with a crime as a collaborator to insurrection and he could face expulsion from Congress permanently. Jordan’s involvement could also further damage Trump’s reputation even more than it already has. Trump has already been accused of inciting the January 6 attack and if Jordan is found to have been involved —it would add to the evidence against Trump who is already perceived as American’s first “traitor” to our democratic Nation while a sitting president!

The House select committee was still investigating the January 6 attack prior to shutting down in January 2023, and it is possible that Jordan will be called to testify before another committee in the future. If Jordan is called to testify, he will likely be asked about his conversations with Trump and other members of Congress on January 6. The committee is also likely to continue to investigate Jordan’s role in the events leading up to the attack.

If the committee found that Jordan was involved in the attack, it could recommend that he be charged with a crime. The investigation into Jim Jordan and January 6 is ongoing concern, and it is unclear what the outcome will be. However, the investigation is likely to have a significant impact on Jordan’s political career and on Trump’s already weaken reputation.

According to the House select committee’s report, Jordan was involved in the following key events leading up to the January 6 attack:

  • On December 31, 2020, Jordan spoke at a White House meeting where Trump and his allies discussed ways to overturn the election results.
  • On January 2, 2021, Jordan met with Trump and other Republican lawmakers to discuss a plan to challenge the election results in Congress on January 6.
  • On January 5, 2021, Jordan gave a speech at a rally where Trump urged his supporters to march on the Capitol and “fight like hell” to overturn the election results.
  • On January 6, 2021, Jordan spoke with Trump on the morning of the attack.

On January 6, 2021, Jordan was one of 147 Republican members of the House who voted to object to the certification of Biden’s victory in Pennsylvania. After the Capitol was breached by Trump supporters, Jordan was seen on the House floor talking to Trump on the phone. Time will tell how long this charade will hold water.
